The Three Brains And How They Work Together
The Head Brain, The Heart Brain And The Gut Brain
If one desires to see improvement in their physical well-being there needs to be an overall approach.
Components to consider when embarking on a health journey towards one’s best health includes past or current stress or trauma, sleep quality, relationship quality, and environmental conditions.
Some of the most impacting aspects of one’s health relate to emotional and mental health. If someone has experienced trauma or extreme stress this has the potential to impact the body’s ability to function at optimal levels.
The mind-body connection is also an emotion-body connection.
Often people speak of the power of the mind and one’s thoughts to affect the body, but even deeper than one’s thoughts are one’s beliefs. The beliefs are often deeper than one’s conscious mind and go deeper into the unconscious aspect of one’s being also known as the heart.
These beliefs can influence one’s thoughts, but they are deeper than just one’s conscious thoughts.
If one desires to change their thoughts and emotions then exploring their deeper beliefs and where they come from is key. It can be extremely helpful to understand the connection between the body’s various systems and how they interact to make healing flow compared to finding one unable to make progress because one part is working against the other.
Studies have shown that the body has three brains (areas of information gathering and influencing) that impact the body. There is the head brain, the heart brain and the gut-brain. One’s beliefs, emotions, thoughts, environment, experiences, relationships and diet will impact all three.
Each of the three brains constantly communicates with each other. Studies show that the gut and heart-brain send more information to the head-brain which will impact one’s decisions. We can promote greater health and well-being by nourishing these three brains, thereby bringing harmony to the nervous system, calming the mind and supporting other bodily systems.
These brains combined affect our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. When all three are healthy and work in synchronization, one can make effective decisions, regulate emotions, and create overall well-being. However, if there is an imbalance or dysfunction in one area then this can lead to negative emotions, physical disease or other issues such as addictions.
If one is able to understand how these three brains function and interact one can prevent disharmony and create wellness. The head brain controls much of the cognitive processing, while the heart brain is impacted greatly by emotions and the gut brain is often associated with instincts and intuition. All three overlap and impact each other.
A vast amount of one’s chemicals that impact one’s mood are created in the gut. Some neurotransmitters reside in the head brain and also impact one’s sense of having a positive or negative state.
The food that one eats can either aid in creating ‘feel-good’ hormones that are productive to the body or they can be destructive to one’s overall health.
Sunlight can also have an immense impact on one’s overall health when the right exposure or lack thereof occurs. Rays from the sun affect many physical aspects of the body thereby impacting one’s mood and health.
One’s relationships can also impact one’s heart brain or rather all three brains thereby impacting one’s health positively or negatively. A person may feel compelled to eat unhealthy food when they feel depressed about a relationship or they may feel overwhelmed which could influence their ability to make healthy choices. If one’s mind or body has been under immense stress this can impact one’s overall health and choices. Looking after all three areas could help one overcome an issue in one area.
It can help greatly to have a way of life and healthy habits in place so that if negative experiences, relationships, or situations arise one is already pre-determined to make healthy choices that will help them in the long term.
As one takes care of their mental health, physical health and emotional health it will help to create a better synchronization between the head brain, heart brain and gut brain.
One may need help in these areas especially if one has experienced extreme stress, trauma, hardship or overwhelm in making choices that will be beneficial concerning every aspect of one’s life.
Some ideas to consider:
-re-evaluate the health of relationships
-re-evaluate one’s daily eating habits
-re-evaluate one’s quality of sleep
-re-evaluate one’s beliefs and thoughts about themselves, life and others in general
-re-evaluate one’s daily routine and how it impacts one’s mood, thoughts, emotions and overall wellbeing
-re-evaluate how one’s mental and emotional life may be impacting one’s overall choices
-re-evaluate if one’s choices in regards to sleep, eating, drinking, what one listens to and watches, who one spends time with and dealing with past or current trauma or stress may be either helping them or making things harder
-re-evaluate if one needs help with making choices that create a healthier life and pray or ask God for a plan as He knows exactly what one needs
Proverbs 17: 22
‘A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.’
