January 20 - Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day celebrates the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who promoted Civil Rights. He is perhaps best known for his ‘I have a dream…’ speech. Martin Luther King, Jr. day became a federally recognized holiday in 1983. In 2000, it became a nationally observed holiday in all states. Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on the third Monday of January each year.

February 20 - World Day of Social Justice

Social Equality Justice day is a day recognizing the need to promote efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion and unemployment.

March 1 - Zero Discrimination Day

Zero Discrimination Day aims to celebrate individuality, inclusion and human rights while promoting tolerance, compassion and peace. Discrimination refers to the selective practice of unfairly treating a person or a group of people differently than others due factors such as religion, gender, race, sexuality, age and disability amongst others. 

March 8 - International Women's Day

Today, the day is celebrated around the world in different ways. It is a day to commemorate the achievements of women and to raise awareness for the social and politician equality of women around the world.

March 21 - World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.

March 22 - World Water Day

World Water Day serves to raise awareness about water issues such as sanitation problems and water shortages in many parts of the world. 

April 7 - World Health Day

World Health Day is celebrated each year on 7th April globally. It was decided that the first World Health Day would be celebrated in 1950 every year in order to raise awareness among people pertaining to health issues and concerns.

May 8 - Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Military Spouse Appreciation Day honors and emphasizes the importance of the Spouses to the Military. The observance wishes to spread that family support is fundamental for the success of the Military. The Spouses and families are “silent heroes”. 

May 8 - Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation

Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives During the Second World War. The observance honors and pays tributes to all victims that died during World War Two. The day also reinforces the importance of maintaining peace. The Observance occurs yearly on May 8th and 9th.

May 20 - National Rescue Dog Day

National Rescue Dog Day brings awareness to the large number of dogs that are currently on dog shelters waiting to be adopted. National Rescue Dog Day celebrates not only the dogs waiting to be rescued, but also their importance and their potential to benefit society. 

June 4 - International Day of Innocent Children Victims

The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression was proclaimed on August 19th of 1982. The observance recognizes the pain that many children suffer during times of war. Children are victims of physical violence, abduction, sexual harassment, and even murder. The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression occurs yearly on June 4th.

June 12 - World Day Against Child Labour

World Day Against Child Labour was launched by the International Labour Organization in 2002. The global awareness day focuses on acknowledging the child labor issue and take the actions necessary to eliminate it. The World Day Against Child Labour happens every year on June 12th.

June 15 - World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to spread acknowledgment about an issue that does not have the visibility that it should, elder abuse, neglection, and exploitation. According to the Administration for Community Living, older Americans lose over 2.6 billion dollars per year because of financial abuse. The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was first observed in 2006, since then, the day has been celebrated yearly on June 15th.

June 20 - World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day serves to commemorate the strength, courage and resilience of millions of refugees that have been forced to flee their homes out of fear of persecution or to escape disasters. The day also aims to recognize refugees for their contribution to the world.

June 23 - International Widows' Day

International Widows’ Day serves to recognize widows and their unique situations worldwide. Widows are women whose husbands have died. After their husbands have passed, many widows are forced to fight for their human rights and overcome many obstacles to ensure their social and economic status.

June 26 - International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

The day as an event is celebrated worldwide with much conscious fervor to make people aware and emphasize the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking. 

July 19- International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence

The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was proclaimed on June 19th of 2015. The observance honors and pays tribute to the victims of sexual violence in conflict, it also emphasizes that the crime needs to eliminated. Communities are encouraged to promote events and lectures to raise awareness regarding the issue.

July 30- World Day against Trafficking in Person

World Day against Trafficking in Human Persons serves to raise awareness of human trafficking and the protection of victims’ rights. Human trafficking exploits humans by forcing them into sexual and labor slave trades. The International Labour Organization estimates that there 21 million victims of forced labor around the world. All countries are affected by human trafficking, participating as either countries of origin, transit or destination.

Aug 7- Purple Heart Day

Purple Heart Day seeks to honor the individuals that were wounded or killed in action while serving in the military. The Purple Heart Medal is given to those who displayed not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way.

Aug 9- International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples seeks to protect and promote the rights, culture and land of indigenous people. Indigenous peoples, descendants of pre-colonial times, have a strong tie to their lands and often suffer from marginalization as a minority group. Despite marginalization, Indigenous People account for about 6% of the world’s population and 90% of its cultural diversity.

Aug 19- World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day seeks to recognize the compassion and bravery of humanitarian workers. The day also serves to gain international cooperation to meet the needs of humanitarian work around the world. Humanitarian workers provide life-saving assistance consisting of first aid, nutrition, shelter and help rebuild after disaster has struck. These workers often battle violence, local diseases and hunger while attempting to save lives and provide relief to those most in need.

Aug 23- International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition commemorates the abolition of slave trade, on August 23rd of 1791, in Santo Domingo, which today is the Dominican Republic. The observance also honors all victims of the act.

Aug 26- Womens Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day encourages and promotes equal rights and opportunities for women. This observance also commemorates the Nineteenth Amendment of the US Constitution. It prohibits denying the right to vote according to gender. Women’s Equality is critical to the economic development of a country. 

Sep 10- World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day promotes worldwide movements to prevent suicides. World Suicide Prevention Day gives organizations, government agencies, and individuals, a chance to promote awareness about the mental illnesses associated with suicide.

Oct 10- World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day seeks to raise awareness of mental health illnesses while educating the population and mobilizing efforts to support mental health. Mental health, which includes a person’s emotional, psychological and social well-being, has become increasingly important in recent decades as an estimated 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

Oct 11- International Day of the Girl

International Day of the Girl aims to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges that they face around the world. Every day, young girls everywhere face challenges involving their rights, access to education, inequality, discrimination, domestic violence and child marriage.

Oct 16- World Food Day

World Food Day is recognized in order to raise awareness about hunger and encourage the public to support efforts to eradicate world hunger. Food plays an essential role in life; many people go without it and cannot guarantee when they will eat their next meals, while others waste large amounts of food every day.

November 9 - World Adoption Day

A special day to raise awareness for adoption and family. Ambassadors from all over the world are organizing events and parties, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate #WorldAdoptionDay.

November 13 - Kindness Day

World Kindness Day seeks to spread and promote kindness. On this day, kindness is encouraged worldwide by being generous, considerate, ethical, and friendly.

November 15 - World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims seeks to honor those who have died in road traffic incidents. 

November 19 - International Men's Day

International Men’s Day celebrates and promotes positive male roles. This includes being a responsible husband, father, and son. This day seeks to encourage men to teach younger boys values such as character and responsibilities that come with being a man.

November 20 - Universal Children's Day

Universal Children’s Day aims to create a day of international fraternity and understanding between children all over the globe. The holiday’s secondary purpose is to promote the objectives and ideals of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child through activities and awareness.

Day of Remembrance for all the Victims of Chemical Warfare commemorates the victims of chemical warfare and serves to reaffirm the world’s commitment to eliminate chemical weapons. Thus, the day also serves to promote peace, security and multilateralism. 

December 2 - International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is annually held on December 2 to raise awareness of the atrocities of modern slavery.

December 3 - International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities seeks to empower the rights of persons with disabilities

December 9 - Genocide Prevention Day

This day seeks to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention and the role that it has in preventing Genocide. It also seeks to acknowledge and honor the victims of Genocide. The Genocide Convention is also known as Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

December 10 - Human Rights Day

Human rights are basically explained by the fact that all Human beings are born Free and Equal in rights and that they are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This is reflected with the words used commonly Equality, Freedom, Peace, Hope, Dignity, Rule of Law, Prosperity & Justice.

December 18- International Migrants Day

International Migrants Day serves to celebrate the movement of migrants and their contribution to world development. Globalization has made the world a much smaller place than it previously was. Humans have always migrated but now they do so much faster and much further, many of whom risk their lives trying to reach a safer land with more opportunities.
